Referral Information

Referrer Information
General Practitioners and optometrists can refer patients to the Northern Specialist Eye Centre through a simple telephone call to (03) 9459- 5133. An appointment is normally available within seven to fourteen days, however emergencies will be seen on the day of referral. Access for patients is easy whether travelling by private or public transport. Following consultation with a patient the specialist involved provides a full report to the referring practitioner. The report includes details of the patient's treatment program, an explanation of how this may affect any other medical treatment the patient is undergoing, and information on how the GP or optometrist can assist in the management of the eye condition.

General Information
Patients are advised not to drive themselves to the first consultation. During this visit the specialist will dilate the patients pupils so vision will be blurry for up to three hours. Sunglasses may help when leaving.
Patients should allow one hour for their appointment. They will receive an initial examination by the orthoptist prior to seeing the ophthamologist.
Diabetic patients attending for flourescein angiography testing should allow for a longer visit and may bring a small portion of food.
For patients of non-English speaking backgrounds, staff at the Northern Specialist Eye Centre can provide interpreting assistance in Arabic, Chinese, Italian and Macedonian.

Billing Policy
The Northern Specialist Eye Centre's fees are set at reasonable rates and attract a Medicare rebate. Pension and Health Care Card holders are charged a reduced fee.

Cancellation Policy
Patients wishing to cancel an appointment are requested to give 24 hours notice.
