Are You Searching for a Melbourne Eye Clinic Due to Digital Eye Strain? Here are 4 Tips That can Help

Are you searching online for a Melbourne eye clinic due to experiencing frequent headaches or blurry vision when at work? It could be a symptom of digital eye strain.

As technology improves, our lives often become easier. There are, however, certain downsides to all the benefits that technology brings. One of which is digital eye strain. The chances of developing the symptoms of digital eye strain, only requires around two hours of constantly staring at a phone screen or a computer monitor. As most people work with phones and computers throughout their day, it’s no surprise that digital eye strain is one of the most common causes of eye strain.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms that people with digital eye strain experience are:

  • Experiencing frequent headaches
  • Having difficulty when concentrating
  • Itchy or a burning sensation in your eyes
  • A sensitivity to light
  • Double or blurry vision
  • Experiencing soreness in your shoulders, neck or back
  • Dry or watery eyes
  • Finding it hard to keep your eyes open

As reducing the amount of time you spend looking at a digital screen at work is not an option for most people, here are four tips to help you reduce the symptoms of digital eye strain.

  1. Minimise screen glare

Reposition your computer monitor to reduce glare from any nearby windows, reflective walls or bright overhead lighting. You can also install anti-glare software or adjust the display settings on your monitor to help reduce eye strain.

  1. Follow the 20-20-20 rule

Designed by optometrist Dr Jeffery Anshell, the ’20-20-20 rule’ is the practice of taking a break from the computer screen every 20 minutes and focusing for 20 seconds on objects that are at least 20 feet away. This is because we blink less when focusing on a computer screen and helps to reduce eye fatigue.

  1. Configure your workstation

You need to make sure your computer monitor is at the correct angle. It needs to be angled upwards, at least 50 centimetres away from your eyes and just below eye level. Make sure your feet are comfortably flat on the floor and that your chair is angled at the correct height so you aren’t slouching or hunching over.

  1. Get an eye examination

The best thing you can do for your eyes if you are experiencing any eye strain or difficulties is to have an eye examination. As symptoms such as pain or blurred vision may be related to other issues, having an eye examination with one of our eye specialists at Northern Eye Centre will identify any undetected issues and will allow you to discuss treatment options moving forward.

If you are searching for a Melbourne eye clinic, Northern Eye Centre has branches conveniently located in Epping and Heidelberg, as well as regional clinics in Swan Hill and Mildura. Call (03) 9459 5133 to book an appointment with an eye specialist in Melbourne today if you find yourself experiencing any symptoms of digital eye strain.
